| Dec 12, 2006 | | Alfred M. Rankin Jr. Elected President of The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees CLEVELAND (December 12, 2006) — The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees today elected Alfred M. Rankin Jr., chairman and CEO of NACCO Industries Inc. and a member of the Board since 1992, to serve as its next president. He succeeds James T. Bartlett, who has served as president since 2001. “The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the world’s great museums and one of our city’s finest cultural, educational and economic assets,” Rankin said. “I am honored to lead the Museum’s Board at this critically important moment in the history of this institution. CMA’s $258 million renovation and expansion project is much needed and will benefit not only the Museum but also our city and our region. This campaign is a great responsibility for it requires the full commitment of our volunteer leadership and the support of the entire community. I look forward to working in close partnership with our trustees to take all of the steps that are needed to realize the full potential of the Cleveland Museum of Art and to maintain its standing as one of this country’s leading art museums.”
| | | May 22, 2006 | | Historic Exhibition of Modern European Masterpieces from The Cleveland Museum of Art to Debut in China From Monet to Picasso: Masterworks from The Cleveland Museum of Art brings together 60 of the Museum’s most highly acclaimed European paintings and sculptures from the late-19th and early-20th centuries. This exhibition marks the first time that an exhibition of modern European masterpieces will be shown in China.
Highlights include: Henri Matisse’s Festival of Flowers, Nice (Fête des Fleurs); Amedeo Modigliani’s Portrait of a Woman; Pablo Picasso’s Bottle, Glass, and Fork; Paul Cézanne’s The Brook; Paul Gauguin’s In the Waves; Vincent van Gogh’s The Poplars at Saint-Rémy; Auguste Rodin’s Heroic Head of Pierre de Wiessant, One of the Burghers of Calais; Berthe Morisot’s Reading; Claude Monet’s The Red Kerchief: Portrait of Mme. Monet; and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Romaine Lacaux.
After premiering at the Beijing World Art Museum, From Monet to Picasso will then travel to: · The Mori Arts Center in Tokyo, Japan, in September · and The Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, South Korea, in December 2006.
This is the first major show of European Impressionists and Modern masters to tour these three major Asian capitals. The exhibition will then travel to approximately five additional North American venues, before returning for reinstallation at the Museum in early 2009. | | | Apr 20, 2006 | | Masterworks from the Cleveland Museum of Art Begin Unprecedented International Tour CLEVELAND (April 20, 2006) — The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) announced today its plans to share more than 500 iconic works from its renowned permanent collection with audiences around the world beginning next month. Over the course of the next four years while the Museum undergoes construction of its $258 million renovation and expansion project, six different exhibitions will tour to more than 12 venues in six countries. This marks a milestone in the Museum’s history, as it will be the first time in the Museum’s 90-year history that such a preponderance of masterworks from CMA’s permanent collection will be on view outside of Cleveland. | | | Oct 7, 2005 | | CMA Receives Initial Bond Rating from S&P CLEVELAND (Oct. 7, 2005)--The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) today received from Standard and Poor’s its first bond rating, the prestigious “AAA” long-term rating on $90 million of variable rate demand bonds. The Museum also received the “A-1+” short-term rating. With the exception of the Smithsonian Institution, the Cleveland Museum of Art is the only U.S. cultural institution and the only U.S. art museum to receive the “AAA” rating from Standard and Poor’s. In addition, it is rare that an institution receive “AAA” as its first rating. The higher an institution’s credit rating on a bond issue, which translates into reduced interest costs, the more marketable its bonds. In the case of CMA, the bonds will be issued through the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority to finance portions of the first milestone of the Museum’s $258 million renovation and expansion project, which will total $159.5 million. According to Standard and Poor’s, The “AAA” (long-term) rating is based on: •Exceptional strong levels of liquidity; •Endowment levels of approximately $700 million, the highest among any art museum in the United States; •Financial operations that have consistently been balanced due to careful budgeting; •Successful diversification of the Museum’s endowment funds; •A committed and seriously engaged Board of Trustees; and •A world-class collection of art.
The Museum’s “A-1+”(rating) is based on a standby bond purchase agreement provided by J.P. Morgan Chase N.A. ('AA-/A-1+'). The outlook is stable based on the expectation of successful completion of the project and reopening of the facility in the expected timeframe. It is also anticipated that balanced financial operations will continue while endowment levels grow from campaign proceeds and appreciation.
| | | Oct 1, 2005 | | CMA Breaks Ground on $258 Million Expansion and Renovation CLEVELAND (Oct. 1, 2005) — The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA), home of one of the world’s most important encyclopedic art collections, launched the start of its $258 million renovation and expansion project today with a ceremonial groundbreaking. The first milestone of the project, for which the Board approved a budget of $159.5 million on Sept. 12, will result in the renovation of the Museum’s architecturally renowned 1971 Breuer Building and its landmark 1916 Beaux Arts Building, as well as the construction of a new East Wing by 2008. The second milestone, which includes a central piazza and a new West Wing, is scheduled for completion in 2011. Still in the advance phase of its fundraising campaign, the Museum has to date received $127.3 million in gifts and pledges from 100 donors.

The Board voted on March 7 to accept the $258 million design package presented by architect Rafael Viñoly with the condition that cost approval would take place at each project milestone, with the first capped at $160 million.
