2006
In January the museum closes to the public to facilitate the connection of new utility lines to all parts of the site.
Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment in the 1971 addition is removed and replaced with efficient new systems.
Renovations to the 1916 building's outer skylight roof begin.
The 1971 addition designed by Marcel Breuer reopens in phases during the summer and fall. The improvements to this building include renovated classrooms and offices and upgrades to the Lecture and Recital halls. An elegant glass enclosure is added to the concrete canopy at the entrance to provide a foyer and a connection to the expanded garage, which is scheduled for completion in late 2007.
The Ingalls Library is relocated to the third floor of the Breuer addition. The library's new facilities include a large, light-filled reading room, seminar rooms and meeting spaces, and new offices and workrooms for the staff.
Barcelona & Modernity opens in October, signaling the resumption of the museum's exhibitions program.
