Timeline to the New Museum
The project has been divided into two phases that, taken together, will span six years.
This approach was chosen because it allowed the collection and some of the staff to remain on site and the museum to remain open, although operating on reduced basis, for much of this time.
The first phase, which was begun in 2005, includes the renovation of both the original building and the 1971 Marcel Breuer addition as well as the construction of a central utility plant and a new wing on East Boulevard.
The second phase, which is scheduled to begin in 2008, will complete Viñoly's plan with the construction of a basement level in the area that lies between the original building and Breuer's addition, a new wing to the west, and a great enclosed courtyard that will knit the entire complex together.
